about
The opening stanza was inspired by a bar in my home town known variously as "Jack's", "Walsh's", "Eamon's", or "Cleary's".
Some of the older clientelle would gather around the kitchen table on the weekends for a game of cards that could run long into the wee hours.
The remaining stanzas are more pastoral, maybe because it was out in the wilds of upstate new York at the time of writing.
lyrics
Men at play and the women talking
Hearts and Diamonds, tea and gin
Minutes fall into the hours
Another hand, and 'round again
Leaves, they fall into the river, wandering
Raven calls from Rowan's cover
A woman wakes to whispering
In idle dark they find each other
Rolling "round and back again
Her long hair upon his shoulder, shimmering
And 'round and 'round again
Night time falls down to the morning, wakening
Walking home form school together
Talking of their weekend's plans
What they'll do if they get the weather
Wondering should he hold her hand
The blossom blooms when blossom's ready
The sun it shines on everyone
The summer bee makes sweetest honey, hovering.
And 'round and 'round again.
Laghdú is an immersive fever dream of two acoustic hardingfeles. The recordings are unadulterated, sonically perfect, and presented in stereo. Each instrument swells and subsides and pushes and pulls, brushing you from all sides with intricate melodies, as if their sounds were neatly carried by unpredictable winds. It's a privilege to experience. Man Watching the Stars
