Summer, and the telly couldn't keep us inside; The swimming pool was open - there was no one staying dry. My granny had a plate with JFK and the pope She hung it in the hall. I guess it gave em all hope. Drinking pint bottles up behind the school yard Waiting for a miracle and watching for the Guards Complaining 'bout the rain and then complaining 'bout the cold Easy on the cigarettes - we don't have anymore. You know we never saw the good times coming 'Cos when they come they hit the ground running. We didn't recognize it 'cos they didn't televize it. No, we never saw the good times coming. Wondering at the buses that would stop in our town Flashy shirts and cameras that always stepped down Asking silly questions about a mystical land God bless em every one - I hope it turned out as planned. I never saw a leprechaun or found a crock of gold Don't kiss the Blarney stone if you intend to grow old 'Cos the things we'd do while no one was looking - but I'm not saying nothing we were only killing time 'cos we were bored out out of our minds You know we never saw the good times coming. Over the Atlantic in a big metal bird Stewardesses muttering their four letter words A couple of Minnesotans stop and chat for a while Fierce romantic notions abut the Emerald Isle I said "Now don't be seeing banshees over every stone wall, and if you see the fairies, well. that's all your own fault. We never cried "cockles". we never cried "mussels" but we cried all night about paying back Brussels. And we never saw the good times coming Cos when they come they hit the ground running We didn't see the tiger 'til we sidled up beside her No we never saw the good times coming. And we never saw the good times coming Cos when they come they hit the ground running I guess you should be ready 'cos you don't know if there's many No, you never see the goo times coming.

There's a girl in my town - eyes of blue, hair of brown. She gets lost in the rain all day. And when the weekend arrives, she spins and dances all night. Burning eyes- "Will you come out and play?" She says 'While I'm in town , watch the days burn down. Watch the days burn down. You know we're only here for a brief time, dear. Watch the days burn down. And when the river is high she sees into her own eyes and sings the black water's melody. And every rain drop that falls - she names one and names them all and she tells them "Wait for me". She says 'While I'm in town , watch the days burn down. Watch the days burn down. You know we're only here for a brief time, dear. Watch the days burn down. There's a girl in my town - eyes of blue, hair of brown. She tells the rain 'Wait for me".

Men at play and the women talking Hearts and Diamonds, tea and gin Minutes fall into the hours Another hand, and 'round again Leaves, they fall into the river, wandering Raven calls from Rowan's cover A woman wakes to whispering In idle dark they find each other Rolling "round and back again Her long hair upon his shoulder, shimmering And 'round and 'round again Night time falls down to the morning, wakening Walking home form school together Talking of their weekend's plans What they'll do if they get the weather Wondering should he hold her hand The blossom blooms when blossom's ready The sun it shines on everyone The summer bee makes sweetest honey, hovering. And 'round and 'round again.

Half a heartbeat away is a whole other way this could have gone. And all the sands in Mandalay, if they only would say, could tell their own stories; "Oh how I rode on a rolling wave. Oh how I swam with the whale." And on the wind, every breath behind every word And every song ever sung, and all the ones never heard. And all the days hidden between every leaf that we read will remain unseen. And every seed on every tree, every grape on the green could tell it's own stories; "Oh how the rain fell down on me. Oh how the wine makes me reel." And on the wind, every breath behind every word And every song ever sung, and all the ones never heard. And at the dark end of day, when there's no one to say where the sun has gone, All the stars are out to play, looking down on where we lay with our own stories.

about

This selection came together over the last few years touring with various fine traditional musicians, some steeped in the Irish tradition , others well versed in African and South American rhythms.

released June 6, 2013

My engineer and co-producer on this project was Kevin Buckley - two great ears on one great guy.
He also laid down fiddle tracks on "Good Times Coming"'.

All percussion and rhythm tracks were supplied by the one and only Brian Melick - a master at his craft.

Pre-mastering by Dakota Dave Hull at Arabica Studio, Minneapolis. Final mastering by Steve Wiese and Dakota Dave Hull at the "A" Room, Creation Audio, Minneapolis.
